This award recognizes that patients and families are an integral part of ICU care. The ICU Heroes Award is offered to an intensive care unit patient and family, in addition to the multiprofessional team that delivered the care. One award is available for both an adult ICU and a pediatric ICU.
Deadline and Submission
The deadline to submit an application for 2018 is August 1, 2017. Questions related to this award may be directed to Adair Andrews.
Applicants are asked to submit a patient’s story (no more than 3 pages) with a focus on attention to patient- and family-centered aspects of care. The following will be considered when evaluating applications:

- Principal Diagnosis
- ICU Course
- Hospital Course
- Outpatient Course
- Final Outcome
- How does this individual’s course demonstrate multiprofessional care?
Criteria and Notification
New this year: The winning patient and ICU team leader will be awarded an “ICU Hero” medal. The institution and patient’s family will receive a plaque that recognizes participation in the care and recovery of the patient. The SCCM President, or member from leadership, will visit the winning institution to present this award. Funding for travel and registration to SCCM’s Critical Care Congress also will be provided to award recipients to share their stories with the SCCM membership.
