Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Installation

Q1.  What do I need to do to get started?

The sepsis database tool is available without charge.  The following steps will get you started:
         1. Register with the Surviving Sepsis Campaign and obtain a
             installation password (see Q2).
         2. Download the software, burn it to a CD, download the installation
manual, and install the database tool (see Q3, Q4. Q5).
         3.  For installation on a network, see the user manual (Q4, Q5, Q6).
         4.  Start the application from the desktop icon, log in with a user id
             and password (see Q7, Q8).
         5.  Consult the user manual, enter your patient charts, and
eventually transmit the charts (without a patient id) to the
Surviving Sepsis Campaign (see Q9, Q10).

Q2.  How do I obtain an installation password?

You obtain an installation password (6-digit number) by registering at the SSC
website
http://ssc.sccm.org/SSCCRDB/Menu_Register.htm.  After you register, the password is displayed on the screen.  SSC will also email the installation password to you so you will have a copy.

Q3.  How do I download the sepsis database tool?

Go to the tab labled "Manual & Database" located at the top of this website. There you will find a selection to download. This is an .iso file. After you download it, you need to copy (burn) the .iso file to a CD.   Then, install the software tool from the CD.

Q4. Where are the installation instructions?

Click here to view the installation instructions. The entire manual can be viewed at:

http://ssc.sccm.org/files/Implementing%20the%20Surviving%20Sepsis%20Campaign.pdf

Q5.  This install document is a pdf file.  How do I read it?

Use the free Adobe Reader.  Downloads are available at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2_allversions.html.

Q6.  Can I install the database tool on a network?

Absolutely, the installation instructions cited above in Q4 covers network installation in extensive detail.
Network installation is preferred because IT backs up data automatically.  If your installation is not on network; please, backup your data weekly. The application is in two parts, one for entering data (SurvivingSepsis.mdb) and the other for the data (SurvivingSepsisBE.mdb).  Both parts are found in the Sepsis database  directory.  If you install the application on a network, the data part (SurvivingSepsisBE.mdb) is installed on a network server.  There, the IT department will routinely back it up.  The data entry part (SurvivingSepsis.mdb) is installed on each desktop and each links to SurvivingSepsisBE.mdb on the network. If you have installed the application only on a desktop, then back-up the data by copying it (SurvivingSepsisBE.mdb) to another hard drive.

Q7.  How do I start the application?

You must start the database tool from the desktop icon named “Shortcut to Surviving Sepsis.”

Q8.  What is the log on user id and password?

This is not the same as the installation password
    Logon User id:
sepsis
    Logon Password:     bundles

Q9.  Do you have a user’s manual?

Yes, you can view the user's manual on this website (click here).

Q10.  How do I transmit patient charts to the Surviving Sepsis Campaign?

Click this link to view "Important Note" information about transmission http://www.survivingsepsis.org/implement/resources/manual_database

Q11.  What is the difference between this current database tool version (3.0) and the prior version of the database?

This version is the international version.  It standardizes the transmitted data into a common format that the SSC database can read.  Two of the major differences between nations are date format and decimal point.  We have had problems reading charts from some nations.

Q12.  What if I have other questions/suggestions?
